Use email. Email is a lot like regular mail and you can use it in many of the same ways. You'll need to sign up with an email service in order to get an address, though. Many email services are free and good ones include GMail and Outlook.com. When you go to check your email, you will go to the website for the service you signed up with and only          the service you signed up with in order to read your mail.

              Use Social Media. Social media is a term that encompasses a lot of different kind of websites, all for connecting and communicating with other people. Commonly used forms of social media include

• Facebook, which is used for lots of different purposes, from messaging to sharing pictures and videos.
• Twitter, which is used for sending very short updates and thoughts about your life.
• Instagram, which is used for sharing pictures. Pinterest which is for sharing items you find on the internet.
• Read or write blogs A blog, which was derived from the term web log, is an online journal. You can put text, pictures, and even videos in a blog. You can write your own or you can read someone else's. Blogs cover all sorts of different subjects, and are starting to replace certain sections of the newspaper in their function.
• Chat! You can use the internet to talk directly with people you know (or even people you don't know). If you want to talk face-to-face or with voice like a phone, you can use services like Skype, which is often free or a low price. You can also type-chat, which is like talking but with just text, using a number of different services.

  Start dating! You can also date online! There are sites that are free, as well as sites that you pay for, all with the goal of helping you meet someone that's right for you. There are even specialty dating websites, for people in particular professions or with special interests. Match and eHarmony are the most common. Meetme is a popular free dating site and app for smartphones, tablets, and computers.

5 Ways to Use a Document Camera in the Classroom

             Document cameras are a great tool for teachers. They allow teachers to take what used to be individual assignments and turn them into class assignments, creating more discussion, interaction, and maintaining students' attention. I highly recommend purchasing of a document camera for your teachers or departments. 

After two years of helping teachers utilize a document camera and providing ideas for how they could use them, it became my turn when I got back into the classroom.  Unfortunately the classroom setup is a little odd, but utilizing other tools, I am able to use the camera in an effective manner with my students.

I am a big fan of my document camera. You have written past blog posts about the model I useand different ways to use document cameras in the classroom. Granted, I have not completely reached full potential with its use in the classroom, but I am getting to the point where I or my students use one everyday.

Graphing Tool

I had students graph data related to population growth in the United States.  I was able to easily go through the procedures on how to label the graph by placing it under the document camera.  I also was able to take graphs from previous classes and showcase them so that students had a good idea of what I was looking for.  Using the image capture, I took pictures of them so that I have them for later.

Highlighting Tool

Students are always asking "What page is that on?"  Using the document camera, I am able to easily show the page to the students, and highlight the area where they should be looking.  It has been great when discussing images and charts that are in the book, something that was much more difficult when I did not have one.

Test Review Tool

I gave a test. When I was done grading the test, I was able to share the various levels of responses with the classes and obscure the name of whose test it was.  Students were then able to see what I was and was not looking for in their answers.  With transparencies that was possible to do, but it was time consuming.

Display Tool

Every handout that I use I now easily display a copy on the board for my students to utilize.

Discussion Tool

Instead of having students answer questions aloud, I have students come to the board as they are working and "write" responses to questions that they have completed and then as a class we can discuss them.

I have realized that the best aspect of a document camera is the ability to have a larger scaled view of what my students are also looking at.  It makes discussing topics much easier and more beneficial in engaging my students.

What is a SMART Board?

A SMART Board is a large, digital, touch-enabled whiteboard which outputs a video source such as the display from a PC, laptop or document camera. You can write on the board in digital ink with a special pen and you can interact with PC applications or document camera images on the board.

How to start the SMART Board using...

...a remote control

1. Log on to the PC
2. Press the red power button on the remote control to turn on the projector
   
   
3. Wait for 30-60 seconds for the projector image to display on the screen

The SMART Board is ready to use when the indicator light on the bottom right of the board is a steady green.

When pressing the power button on the remote, you may see a message "Press off?"

This means that the projector is in sleep mode. To come out of sleep mode, press the Enter button, or one of the direction buttons, on the remote.

1. Press the power button on the doc cam
2. Select the source to project onto the SMART Board by using the control panel buttons on the base of the document camera, i.e.
   • Select Computer if you want to project the Presentation PC
   • Select Camera if you want to project the document camera imag.

• Switch OFF the Document Camera to project the Presentation PC
• Switch ON the Document Camera to project the document using the document camera.

Using the AMX keypad

1. Log on to the PC
2. Press Projector On on the keypad
3. Wait for the Projector On button light to stop flashing and the projector to output an image
4. Press the Main PC button

The image displayed on your PC monitor will be projected on the SMART Board, together with the SMART Board software toolbar on the left hand side.

Annotating the board

The pen tray contains different colour coded digital pens and an eraser. After you pick up any item, you will see the blue light, which means that the item is in operation.

You can use the pens to draw, write or highlight on the SMART Board screen. To erase your markings on the screen, use the eraser. The pen tray automatically detects which item you have selected, which allows you to write on the board or erase with your finger, so long as you pick up the item.

Using the SMART Notebook Software with the SMART Board

You can use the SMART Notebook software to create presentations using a combination of the computer, document camera, and the SMART Board screen. You can then save the presentation as a SMART Notebook file.

1. Ensure the PC is displayed on the SMART Board
2. Start the SMART Notebook software, either by
   • clicking the Notebook icon on the SMART Board software toolbar
   • clicking Start > All Programs > Smart Technologies > SMART Notebook 11
3. Select File > New to create a new blank file if one doesn't open automatically.
4. Add/remove objects or notations using the PC or the SMART Board screen
   
   
5. Select the Add Page icon in the toolbar to create an additional blank page while preserving the existing page
6. Select the Document Camera icon on the toolbar in order to incorporate the document camera display in the SMART Notebook file

Saving your SMART Board presentation

1. Select File then Save to save your SMART Board presentation

You can open the file later in any Windows or Mac computer running SMART Notebook software. The files can be exported to a variety of formats, including PowerPoint and PDF.

Setting Up Your Laptop

If you are using the laptop in your home, find an outlet and plug the charger in. Laptop computers run on batteries that can deplete rapidly, especially if you're using your laptop intensively. Unless you're somewhere remote or foreign where you absolutely have to go without, it's better to leave your laptop plugged in.

Place the bottom part of the laptop on the table/desk you are sitting in front of. They're called "laptops" because they can go on your lap, but that doesn't mean that it's always the best or right place. Try to find a comfortable angle for your wrists and hands - this might mean moving the laptop around until you find the best position for you.

• Don't place your laptop on soft, fuzzy or shaggy surfaces that can block its vents. Most laptops have fan vents located on the sides and bottom that should be left unblocked for the laptop to run.

  Lift the lid to open up until the screen looks comfortable for you. Most laptops have some type of clasp or latch which allows the screen to open.

  • If the laptop won't open, don't try to force it! Look for a latch instead. You shouldn't have to force the screen open.
  • Do not pull back the lid too far. A 45 degree obtuse angle is the most the laptop should be open to. The lid or hinge mechanism may be damaged or broken if pulled back any further.

    Find the power button and turn it on. On most laptops, the power button is located slightly behind the keyboard. The power button is usually marked with the universal symbol for 'power on', a circle with a line going halfway through it.

    Wait for the laptop to boot up. Since laptops are designed for portability as well as computing power, your laptop may have specialized hardware that will cause it to take longer to boot up than a desktop or smart phone.

  1. 6.Use the laptop's pointing device. On most computers, this is a flat, touch-sensitive area called a trackpad which will allow you to use your finger as your mouse. Simply slide one finger on the trackpad area to move the cursor.

     • Many trackpads are multi-touch - using multiple fingers will produce different user interface actions than using just one. Experiment with your laptop by dragging one, two or three fingers across it and trying different 'gestures' or movements with your fingers.
     • Lenovo laptops may use a small, red joystick-like button called a "trackpoint" located in the middle of the keyboard between the 'G' and 'H' keys. Use it just like a very sensitive joystick for just your finger.
     • Some older laptops may have a trackball. Rolling the ball on a trackball will cause the mouse pointer to move around.
     • Some laptops are equipped with a pen interface. A pen will be attached to the laptop in these cases. Hover the pen over the screen to move the pointer, and press the pen to the screen to click.
     • Do you find laptop pointing devices tiny and difficult to use? You can always attach a mouse to a laptop. Locate the laptop's USB port and attach a mouse if you'd like to use one. The laptop will automatically recognize the mouse and make it ready for you to use.

       Use the trackpad's left click button as your primary mouse button. On most trackpads, you can click using a button located on the bottom left of the trackpad.

       • Some trackpads may allow you to tap lightly on the pad surface to click. Experiment - you might discover additional functionality to your laptop you didn't know you had.

         Use the trackpad's right click button as the secondary mouse button. You'll do anything involving a "contextual menu" or a "right click" by just pressing the right click button located at bottom right of the trackpad.

         Locate your laptop's optical drive, if any. If your laptop is not a 'netbook' it probably has an optical drive which you can use to install software or play music. The optical drive is usually located on the right or left side of the laptop.

         • In Windows and Mac OS, you can open the optical drive by pushing the small button on it, or by right-clicking the optical drive icon in your operating system and selecting "Eject".

If you’ve ever wondered how to start a blog, you’re in luck because that’s exactly what I’m going to show you today.

20 minutes is all you need, and you DON’T need any knowledge of HTML, coding or graphics design.

I’ll walk you through the whole process in a moment, but first, let me tell you my story…

4 years ago, I didn’t know the slightest thing about creating a blog. Greatly excited by the prospect of starting a blog of my own, I went ahead to register my first domain name.

Then, I became confused. I didn’t know what to do next. I struggled for 18 days, invested time and energy to understand the new “blog,” checking Google for stuff like “how to create blog” without grasping anything.

Everything I found seemed technical. I got frustrated.

In despair, I abandoned the new domain name for… 6 months.

Then, I went back to it, having eventually learnt that I needed not just a domain name but also a hosting account to open a blog.

So… I started my first blog, and struggled with each step because I had no one to guide me. You can set up a blog in 20 minutes, but it took me 6 months the first time out.

Over the years, I’ve learnt a lot about blogging and I’ve set up many successful blogs for myself. I’ve also showed thousands of people how to create a blog of their own, by themselves. I know what best practices to use and the mistakes to avoid.

I want to help you avoid all the pains I endured.

Step 1: Know WHY you want to start a blog

When you know your destination, finding your direction becomes easier, right?

People start blogs for different reasons. Today, blogging is a great way to:

• Become a better person. Blogging helps you think clearer, communicate with intentionality and build your creative flair.
• Improve your writing. Writing proficiency comes with regular practice and starting a blog helps you write regularly
• Make your voice heard. Gone are the days when only powerful politicians and wealthy businessmen could air their views. Now, you, too, can!
• Make a difference. You want to help people take control of their personal finance? Start your own blog. You wish people would exercise more, take healthier meals and rest better? Start a blog.
• Get published. The world is changing, and traditional publishers are falling into irrelevance. Smart authors now make a blog, build a loyal audience and publish their works. This approach works always.
• Make money. It takes time and commitment but people make real money from blogs. I’ve made tens of thousands of dollars myself from blogging. And many folks I’ve taught how to open a blog are doing fine too.

You can start a cool blog for any or all of the above purposes. Just use this simple guide, and you’ll see how easy it is.

Step 2: Decide WHAT your blog will focus on

People start different classes of blogs.

Travel blogs. Vegetarian blogs. Romance blogs. Writing blogs. Marketing blogs. Political blogs. Religion blogs. Fashion blogs. Photography blogs.

So… what type of blog should you start?

What will be the focus or theme of your blog? This theme is called a niche –– and you should have one.

The best is to choose a niche you’re passionate about. Blogging is to be enjoyed. You know, there’s fulfillment in connecting with others and providing helpful information. You’ll experience this joy, and be able to do it for long, if you’re passionate about what you blog about.

When I finally launched my first blog, I found I was really passionate about writing and publishing. So I made that my niche and was able to connect with, learn from and impact many nice people. I even made money from it. I was fulfilled.

What are your hobbies?

What do you feel happy doing? What are you always excited to talk about to your friends?

Is it fashion, technology, entrepreneurship, leadership, food, traveling, relationship, movies or fiction? That’s probably what you should be blogging about. If you’re passionate about it, you can keep sharing useful information about it.

Create a blog today, and talk about what you love, what you know, and what you’re learning. It’s easy, and you CAN do it.

Step 3: Decide WHICH of the blogging platforms you’ll use

The question, “How do you start a blog?” has many alternative answers. You can do it on blogging platforms like:

• Blogger: e.g. yourfashionguy.blogspot.com
• Hosted WordPress: e.g. yourfashionguy.wordpress.com
• Self-Hosted WordPress: e.g. yourfashionguy.com

The first two options are free. But they’re also clumsy and ugly, don’t you think?

If your interest is to start a blog for business, a self-hosted WordPress blog is more professional. If it’s to do it for a cause or as a hobby, a self-hosted WordPress blog is more elegant.

The free blogging platforms aren’t really free.

They come with TONS of annoying limitations that just enslave you. Here’s 5 of them:

Limit #1: if you think the companies allowing you to create a blog on their blogging platforms for free do so because they love you, you’re wrong. They only do so to make money off of you. That’s why they put up adverts on your blog and ask you to pay to enjoy upgrades. Go for a self-hosted blog so you won’t be a wheel in a car working to make another company rich.

Limit #2: you’re not allowed to do affiliate marketing on free blogs. Some of them further prohibit Google Adsense and other cool ways to make money blogging. That’s not how to start a blog rightly.

Limit #3: you can’t use any of the thousands of amazing plugins and themes available to a self-hosted blog. After making a blog, plugins help you extend the functionality of the blog, the same way apps extend the functionality of a phone. Imagine having a phone without being able to install and use apps. Is it cool to live in a house you’re prohibited from painting and designing? If it’s not, then it sucks to have a blog without being able to use a theme on it.

Limit #4: you can’t use a custom email like John@YourFashionGuy.com. That’s not cool. You deserve something better.

Limit #5: on free blogging platforms, your blog can be deleted at anytime if the company’s server mistakes your blog for a spam, or if you accidentally violate their rules. And guess what – you have no remedy if that happens.

So the smart choice is to go with a self-hosted blog.

How much does a self-hosted blog cost?

Turns out, not much.

What you’ll pay to set up your blog is less than a movie ticket. First, you’ll need a domain name – usually sold for $15 but I’ll tell you how to grab it for FREE.

Second, you’ll need a hosting account which costs less than $72 for the first year.

I’ll show you how easy both steps are in a moment.

Step 4: Decide which web host to use

In my many years of creating and managing blogs, I’ve learnt from bitter experiences that NOT many web hosts are awesome. I’ve used some big name web hosts in the past, and while they make sweet promises, their services are not really that good.

• Their servers often had issues and make my sites load slowly and go down too often (this gave me nightmares in day time)
• Their customer care agents were often too lazy, clueless or too busy with other things to properly offer a help when I needed it
• They do some aggressive, spammy marketing like installing plugins or placing their links on my websites without my consent

Today, the reliable web host I recommend is HostGator.

Why HostGator is reliable

#1: they provide 24/7 customer support through chat, phone, or email and in my experience, their customer service reps are helpful, polite and professional.

#2: they guarantee and provide an amazing server uptime of 99.9%. Very few web hosts can match that feat.

#3: they give you SSL – if you don’t have SSL (https://) for your site then you could be losing traffic from google.

#4: their service is extremely easy to use, and they have an option that is specifically tailored to WordPress. Whether you’re an expert or a non-geek, they’ll make your experience memorable.

Step 5: Go to www.HostGator.com and click start your WordPress blog

First, go to HostGator and click “Start Your WordPress Blog Now” for hosting.

On the next page, enter the domain name you want to register for free, choose the domain extension (I’d go with “.com“) and Host Gator will automatically let you know if its taken. Then they will ask you if you want to add other extensions. I recommend at least picking up the .net and .org if they are available.

On the next page, choose your hosting plan. I recommend the “Hatchling Plan” because this is probably your first blog. If you plan to get more, you can always upgrade later.

Next you will create a login and security pin.  Be sure to take a minute and note these items somewhere so you can access them later.

The 3rd step on this page is to enter your billing information.

4th is the recommended addons.  I recommend you get the HackAlert monitoring but the other two items are not as important.

Review your details and at the bottom of the page be sure to check the box indicating you agree to the terms (after you have read them of coarse)

Step 6: Setting Up Your WordPress Site on Host Gator

To set up your wordpress site you will need to login to your cpanel. Just head over to your welcome email from hostgator and find the cpanel login details and beside the text “Your Control Panel” you will see the url to login:

Go to the URL indicated and login. Next click “Get Started with WordPress” under the Special Offers section.

Next, click the “Install” button. And follow the prompts to install wordpress on your new domain.  Be sure to use your real email address so you can get your wordpress user name and password.

That is all the settings you need to change, finally click install at the bottom. The installer will take a few minutes and finally you will see the success screen.

Now your wordpress site is up and running Great Job!

Step 7: Login to your new blog and start blogging

Open a new browser tab and go to “http://YourNewBlog.com/wp-admin” (replace “YourNewBlog.com” with your blog domain name). Login with the username and password you copied in step 5 above.

You’ll see your blog dashboard. This is the “back side” of your website from where you set everything that your readers see on the “front side”.

Look to the left of your dashboard and you’ll see menus.

If you want to publish a new post on your blog right away, that’s totally fine. The post doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be published, to get you started. So go ahead and do it.

Hover the mouse on “Posts” and click “Add New” from the sub-menus that pop out.

Add the title of your post in the first tab and the content in the second tab.

Hit “Publish”.

When the next page loads, click “View post” to see how your new post appears to your readers.
